A plethora of free books

I got a Kindle for Christmas. (Thanks, Mom and Dad!) It’s absolutely wonderful.  The screen, the size, the weight (or lack thereof), the interface, all are great. It’s way better than an iPad, and I’m a MacBoy. Plus, the whole E-Ink display is amazing (who knew it uses actual ink? – read about it here).

When I opened it up, I noticed it came pre-loaded with several works, like Aesop’s Fables, The Art of War, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Alice in Wonderland, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and about 20 others. I was happy about that, but not nearly as happy as I was to find that there are probably HUNDREDS of free classic works available at the Kindle Store just waiting for me to download them. *Glee*

The Bible (various versions)? Free.

The Works of Shakespeare? Free.

George Muller’s autobiography? Free.

The Velveteen Rabbit? Free.

Classic fairy tales, myths, and folk stories? Free.

Works of puritan pastors and church reformers? Free.

Cookbooks for all kinds of occassions? Free.

The Hound of the Baskervilles? Free.

Now, if you haven’t been bestowed with a Kindle of your own, you CAN STILL access all these free books from Amazon.com.  Simply download Kindle for PC or Kindle for Mac (or iPhone, android, or any of that nonsense you please). They’re free to download. You will need an Amazon.com account, but you probably already have one.

Now, mind you, I’m not a huge fan of Amazon as a company, and I don’t want this post to be considered a corporate endorsement of Kindle or anything like that. But I love free books, and my guess is you do too. I just thought you’d like to know they’re out there :)

Of course, Kindle isn’t the only place for free eBooks. I’m also a big fan of Project Gutenberg, which has a huge collections of public domain works you can download for free, including some of the finest literature ever written, like Les Miserables, and My Man Jeeves.

If you know of a great place to find free books online, tell us in the comments! Right now I’m in the middle of George Muller’s autobiography, and I absolutely love it.

Hello, Homeschooling World!

Hey, my name is Marinah Boyles and I’m this semester’s intern at Bright Ideas Press. Between learning the “interesting” acronyms used for curricula (such as MoH for Mystery of History and AAH for All-American History), I’ve also managed to fill some shipping orders, go over the basics of the office software, and find what Bright Ideas Press is all about. As a lifetime homeschooler who has survived through 11th grade, I’ve used a lot of Bright Ideas’ curricula in the past. This internship has helped me to better grasp homeschooling in general and understand Bright Ideas’ unique mission of customer-focused service. I look forward to working with you in this coming semester and have already found myself at home in the yellow, sun-shiny office of Bright Ideas Press. Hope you all have an amazing school year and enjoy our affordable, faith-based products!

In Christ,

Marinah Boyles

FAQ: Co-ops and licensing

We get a lot of calls at the office asking if we allow you to copy pages from your book for a whole co-op or classroom. First, I’d like to say that  we really appreciate the fact that y’all are trying to work within copyright law, and if you have questions you ASK us. That’s really encouraging. A lot of our material would probably be pretty easy to pirate if you wanted to, and it speaks well of your character that you don’t.

Here’s the gist of our permissions.

Single-Family licenses:

You can photocopy (or in the case of CDs or Downloads like Illuminations, print) anything you want for your own family. (Our Student Activity Books are included in this statement, although it’s usually less expensive to buy a second consumable workbook than to photocopy every page.)*

Co-Op licenses:

If it comes on a CD or you can download it from our website, you can purchase a Co-Op license by calling our office at (877) 492-8081. The price is 2.5 times the retail price, and can be used for up to 25 students. For example, A Young Scholar’s Guide to Composers CD retails for $29.95, so to get a Co-Op version instead would be $74.88. If you have three or more families in your co-op, this will save you money. If you have 25 students in your class, each student is only paying $3, instead of the $30 they would if they bought their own copy!

(Most families don’t need to worry about this, it’s more for mega-co-ops and private schools: if you have more then 25 students, you’ll need to purchase another license, which is good for another 25 students. If you have less then 25, you still get to use it for that many students. If you teach the same class to a different group of kids later, you can apply those unused slots at that time.)

With books, especially the readers for All American History or The Mystery of History, you can either get a license to reproduce the pages (using the same guidelines as above), or you can place a bulk order. It really depends on if you want to: (a) read selections aloud in class, or pass out a few photocopied pages for at-home reading, or (b) each student to have their own book to read at home.

If you want (b), call the office. We offer a nifty 30% discount to Co-Ops purchasing 6 or more of a title. Make sure you have one person as our contact who can give us a Visa or MasterCard for the whole order. Shipping (within the US) will probably be around 2$/book, depending on weight of the book.

I hope this has been helpful for you. We want to make sure that our products are affordable for people, which is why we keep our prices low, offer bulk or missionary discounts, and provide group licenses. (Also, if you’re interested, we often have scratch-and-dent books in stock which we sell for less. It never hurts to ask!)  We really appreciate the great attitudes of the co-op leaders we’ve talked to who make sure they’re doing the right thing when they order from us. Blessings,

-Tyler the Office Manager

Behind the scenes at BIP

Maggie and the office staff were up to the eyeballs in office clutter, cat hair, and dirty dishes. Maggie couldn’t take it anymore! This is our busiest office time of the year and no one could really stop long enough to make a dent in the disaster. So she assigned me to be the Office Clean Up Crew Dictator and set today as the Get ‘er ‘Done Day. Look out world!

This morning I cleverly showed up at the office started with Dunkin’ Donuts and coffee!  How could everyone not love me now? All employees showed up by 9:00am to receive their assigned cleaning details.  Everyone was given an area, no whining allowed!  After about 6 hours of Task Master Sergeant Stacey giving orders the massive job was done.  You wouldn’t believe the stuff we found!! Both missing items and some very, very old memorabilia! Do we really need files back from 1992 printed on dot matrix machines??

Recycle bins are filled to the brim with discarded items, all table tops cleared, and I do believe the air smells cleaner. I hope in the following weeks to see a boost in productivity.  And now I can find the literature books being used for Illuminations Year Three.  :-)

Next week’s blog will be about the writing programs used in Illuminations, which I hope will help people pick the right program for their students.

Enjoying the cleaner office,

Stacey Lane
