I hear so much wisdom in these words, Maggie. I love that you're a "real" mom and not a "Martha Stewart" one. We don't even need that kind of pressure to perform to some artificial standard. Martha has an entire corporation to plan, organize, and fulfill her ideas. We normally have just ourselves!

I totally agree about the journey. I've stopped worrying about how much we accomplish and simply take pleasure in the forward motion. As long as we are not going backwards, I'm content.

Thanks for your kind words, Christine.
I'm always glad when my messes (and the way God has and is growing me) are inspirational!
I would be sad for my lessons to go to waste :-)

I love the post. I sometimes forget to keep things fresh and fun. I also have an 8 month old baby, so this was really speaking to me. I've been homeschooling for 3 years. I also was homeschooled myself but even with all this experience, I still need reminders that I'm mom first and foremost. We are not a school and we need to do what works best for our family.

What helps me the most:
(AKA take these away and I might as well curl up in my chair with a good book - if I remember to get one from the library since you took my planner which tells me to go to the library) :-)

3-ring binders w/ homemade dividers (my daughter makes GORGEOUS ones for me!)
Moleskines (oh, addicted)
File Folders (pretty, please)
Franklin Covey planner

I am only organized out of sheer desperation.

As I migrate out of a box....i am migrating towards goals and objects for a week right now...soon, will for a month, I am sure...and yes, our time is spread through out the day....I"m still looking for a balance with my youngest, but feeling more confident in my ability to help each of my children learn in their various styles. Thank you for this post.

I've got 3 kids, one super picky, one ADD/ODD and another dyslexic/dysgraphic but all brilliant:-). I teach adults and older kids to bring in money 2-3 days a week (kids can go with me), and I seem to have papers everywhere, all the time! I throw away daily and I'm still drowning. I have a bag for every thing - one for scouts, one for teaching kids, one for adult teaching, one for activities...I'm drowning in bags and seem to be running around all the time, inside my house and out. How do you do it all? Cause I have such a mess;-) But I love homeschooling. I can't wait to read the other installments. Thanks for being so forthright.

Thank you Kathy and YES! I always need reminders - preaching to the choir here ;-)
And even though my sons have graduated I still, as a mom, grandmom, author, speaker, and business owner, REALLY need to keep working on simple and practical ways to get and stay organized. God bless you in your homeschool journey.

Gayla, I am so with you! For me the only way I could manage was one week at a time. For awhile I longed to be "that mom" with her color coordinated schedule/matching planner and precise routine, I finally came to understand - and accept - that I am not wired that way. BUT God IS a God of order so I had to learn a reasonably orderly process that would be pleasing to Him and do-able for me. Not that I have it done pat, every season brings changes, but it is a fairly simple goal now instead of dreaming the impossible dram! LOL!
God bless,
