English from the Roots Up
English from the Roots Up (ERU) has two volumes; each volume has 100 Latin and Greek root words. Illuminations Year 1 uses ERU volume 1 and Illuminations Year 2 uses ERU volume 2. Each volume is a great resource book on the root words, but does not offer any student workbook pages, activities, or lesson plans. So, for our users, Illuminations includes lesson plans, notebook pages, games, activities, and quizzes!
ERU follows a 2 day schedule. In the yahoo group, you can find photos of posters for keeping track of words learned.
In the first few weeks, they do learn words on both days to get started on the program, but after week 7, the lesson plans generally have new words the first lesson and then games or activities on the second day of the lessons.
Examples of games would be Name that Root Word, Hangman, Bingo or Jeopardy. Examples of mini books would be Numbers, Mini Family Scrapbook or Opposites.
For my family this was a time for some fun! Usually the games took about 10 to 20 minutes to play. We all played together from Kindergarten to High school. I would help the younger ones but they did enjoy getting a root word faster than their older siblings did. Instead of buying the cards with the book, I had my kids write out their own, it helped them to better learn the words.
My family is looking forward to doing ERU volume 1 again in Illuminations year 3, we want to see how many words the older ones still remember and give another chance for the younger ones to learn some more roots.

Do the kids learn and retrain the words better with the games?
Rhonda,
I find that my kids learn better with the games because they enjoy them and are more willing to do them more then once. The games also provide a place for my kids to hang the info on in their brain. For example they might remember what word helped them win the game or what word we lost when playing one of the games. Besides playing hangman just gets different brain cells in play, which I gotta think helps them to remember them. At my house all my kids know which one word their 5 year old brother knows and any time that word comes up they all look at him and say “Derek what’s your latin word?” In which case he always responds “mons.”
Where do I get lesson plans for EFRU? Do you post them or do I need to be involved in this Illuminations group? I am healing from surgery 1100 miles away from home and do not have my EFRU book……thanks.
The lesson plans for ERU are included in Illuminations, for both middle-school and high-school levels. HTH – tyler
I think the pictures of the posters are gone…?
Tracey, this is an old post. Are the posters gone from the Yahoo group?
