Using Periscope in Your HomeschoolAndrea Thorpe
This past spring a new social media platform was unveiled and over the next few months its popularity soared. By summer’s end, thousands and thousands of people had downloaded Periscope onto their phones and they were using the new app to connect with people all over the world.
Curiosity soon got the best of me, so I downloaded the Periscope app onto my phone. Within a day, I was hooked. I found interesting people to follow, and soon began thinking of ways I could use the app to enhance my homeschooling.
Periscope is a social media application that allows users to create and watch live broadcasts, also called scopes, from all over the world. Users can with interact with viewers in real time by typing comments or by tapping the phone’s screen to release a colorful stream of hearts which represent your applause or appreciation.
Though many people use Periscope for recreational purposes, homeschoolers can use Periscope to enhance the education provided at home. So how can homeschoolers use Periscope?
Watch and Learn
Check to see if your favorite bloggers or companies are active on Periscope. Follow them and see who they follow. We discovered a broadcaster known as Euro Maestro, and have followed him as he’s toured a variety of places in Europe. In addition, we also found a fellow homeschooler across the country and watched her family’s chicks hatch from their incubators.
You and the kids can brush up on public speaking skills by recording your own scopes. Did you have great success creating that gorgeous eggshell mosaic? Want to show the world what your newly organized homeschool space looks like? Record your very own scope and show other homeschoolers how you do things.
Converse with Others
While a broadcaster is recording, you can type in questions and comments. Most broadcasters are happy to receive interaction, so they will to reply to comments and questions on the spot. So if you want to know more about something, ask. And if you happen to miss a live broadcast, don’t fret, a replay is available for the next 24 hours.
Even though Periscope can be a great resource for homeschoolers, users should take precautions when using the platform. These precautions will help users maintain privacy and promote safety.
- Turn off location services so your location is not revealed to everyone.
- Create private scopes for a select group of people so you determine who sees your content.
- Use the blocking option to dismiss users who make inappropriate comments or distract your viewing.
- Supervise children who are using Periscope so they will not come into contact with strangers.
As technology advances, homeschoolers will find there are many resources that can be used to make learning fun and meaningful. Periscope has been a valuable and fun resource for our homeschool family. Have you used Periscope in your homeschool?
