The history of geography is full of fascinating figures whose contributions to math, science, exploration, the humanities, and art made an enormous difference in how we understand the world today. Here are some of my favorite figures:

    Ptolemy: Wrote Geographia
Gerardus Mercator: Created a map projection that made use of Rhumb Lines
John Harrison: Invented the Marine Chronometer and established Lattitude
Lt. Col. William Lambton & Col. Sir George Everest: Commanded the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India

Who are some other figures you know from science and history who should be added to the list?
(Also, feel free to research the people mentioned above — they all have great stories!)
