Many places have indigenous species of plants or animals that are unique to the region, or have historical, economic, or symbolic significance. Most states even have official state animals/birds/insects/trees/flowers/etc.

For example, Delaware’s state bird is the Blue Hen, thanks to a long history of cockfighting. Chickens are also a significant part of our agricultural economy, as we raise chickens for eggs and meat. For flora, the nearby town of Camden hosts an annual summer Peach festival, which in the past has been held in conjunction with our local orchard’s peach harvest.

What’s your state/city’s local plant or animal?
